More Nutritious Meals

Did you know that certain foods can be combined in order to increase their nutritional content? Combining certain foods properly can enhance the bioavailability of naturally occurring chemical compounds. Here are seven simple ways that you can get more value from your nutritional dollars.

1. According to University of Illinois research, tomatoes and broccoli combined powerfully increase their cancer fighting compounds. The carotenoids in tomatoes can be easily absorbed by your body by cooking them and combining them with healthy fats. You can make a pasta sauce using olive oil and sauteed, or lightly steamed, broccoli.

2. Salads are one the best foods you can include into your daily diet. Salads are high in phytochemicals, fiber, antioxidants and other nutrients. If you’re using fat-free dressings on your salads, you might be missing out on the benefits. By simply using oil and vinegar to dress your salad, or by combining it with healthy fats, you can dramatically increase its nutritional content. Add olive, walnut and pumpkin seed oil to your vinegar dressing. Or sprinkle some nuts (walnuts (pecans), almonds, etc.) on top.

3. To get the best iron rich foods, such as spinach and beets, egg whites, liver, lean sirloin, lean steaks, and sardines, you should pair them with vitamin C rich foods. The iron is absorbed more efficiently by vitamin C. These foods are easy to pair together, as they go well together. Add a squeeze or two of lime to your spinach, beets and lentil soup. Serve your meat or poultry with a baked potato or red-and-green bell peppers. Pair scrambled eggs or salami with the eggs. Allow your imagination to take charge and be bold.
